Energy consumption increased slightly in 2017. This covers a dramatic fall in coal consumption and increasing consumption of renewable energy. Overall, this led to a considerable drop in CO2 emissions last year. These are some of the results in the Energy Statistics 2017, which were published by the Danish Energy Agency today. 2017 was the last year in which Denmark produced more oil than the country consumed. The latest forecast from the Danish Energy Agency shows that from 2018 Denmark is expected to be a net importer of oil. However, Denmark is still expected to remain a net exporter of gas until 2035 - except for a few years where the Tyra facilities are rebuilt.

The Ukrainian Minister of Energy, Ihor Nasalyk, is currently in Denmark in order to mark the valuable results of the Danish and Ukrainian governments’ collaboration on energy. Consumption of renewable energy increased by almost 11%, while coal consumption fell by 21% in 2017. Overall, this led to a large drop in energy-related CO2 emissions. This appears by the Danish Energy Agency’s preliminary energy statistics for 2017, which also show that Denmark's degree of self-sufficiency increased last year.

Lower electricity imports and less windy conditions for wind turbines resulted in increased energy consumption and increased observed CO2 emissions in 2016. As power plants in particular also used more biomass, consumption of renewable energy increased, raising the share of renewable energy to 31.3%.

The Danish Energy Agency launches the Balmorel Lite tool for assessment of the value of renewable energy in different electricity systems. Based on existing power plants, various scenarios can be simulated to represent potential system effects of various investments in renewable energy sources like wind and solar. Higher electricity imports and much higher wind power generation led to a large drop in consumption of coal and other fossil fuels at power plants in 2015. This in turn meant that observed CO2 emissions fell by 6.6% in 2015, and that renewable energy now covers 56% of electricity consumption. These are headlines from Energy Statistics 2015, which were published by the Danish Energy Agency today.

The Danish Energy Agency calls for tenders from businesses and private individuals regarding aid for 20 MW solar PV. A part of the tender is cross-border as 2.4 MW will be open to solar PV projects located in Germany. At the same time Germany conducts a tender on support for 50 MW solar PV, which is also open to installations in Denmark.
